Fist time I met Capt. he was working on a strange looking car in his garage. He asked me to hand him a 13mm wrench which at the time I did not know the difference between a wrench and a spanner. Capt. Carmichael was not a tall man but was trim and fit. He sported a Clark Gable mustache for the many years that I knew him. After his passing I was going through some boxes from his office and discovered his military files and records. Capt. was always telling stories about living on St. Simons Island, his Naval Academy years, his friendship with Capt. John Court who was his roommate, brother in law and closest friend. Capt did tell some stories about being on a battle ship (USS Mississippi) or a cruiser (USS Cleveland). But like most WWII Vets they tend not to talk to much about their time in harms way.
We are fortunate that Capt. was the editor a monthly column in the Naval Academy Alumni Magazine Shipmate. For many years Capt. wrote about his personal experiences in the Navy, before, during and after WWII.
It is this blog that I would like to post the records of Capt. John Harlee Carmichael, USN Ret, along with his stories published in Shipmate and any historical records that verifies his life history.
